Urge Biden: No New Leases for Offshore Drilling
Our children and grandchildren deserve clean water, healthy food, and jobs powered by justly-sourced, 100% renewable energy. The Gulf South has the potential to be this bright future: a place for rest, livelihoods for seafood harvesters, home to some of the best cuisine in the nation, and a bayou ecosystem rich in biodiversity.
The problem is that the fossil fuel industry is given a free pass to pollute — harming Black and Indigenous, rural and low-income communities of the Gulf South the most.
In June, the Biden Administration will put out a 5-year-lease for new offshore drilling, which will affect life in the Gulf South for decades. This plan allows private companies to drill for oil in the publicly held ocean floor and sell it back to us at a steep profit. The industry already has more than 9,000 unused leases on public lands, more than enough oil and gas to take the country beyond 2030 (which the United Nations has identified as a key deadline for meaningful climate action).
The federal government must make meaningful investments in the nation’s renewable energy security and independence. Offshore drilling takes us in the wrong direction.
Frontline communities must direct the vision for the Gulf South. As Gulf South residents, we say "NO" to new oil drilling leases and "YES" to a healthy, just, and renewable energy future for generations to come.
